The Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Global and Environmental Studies (BSocSc(GES)) programme from the Department of Social Sciences (SSC) has long had the tradition of arranging overseas trips for its students to help broaden their horizons. We believe that visiting foreign countries and speaking with people from different cultures stimulates our students to think more deeply about the global and environmental issues they come across in the classroom, and learn about new ways to address these issues.

In December 2022, following the lifting of travel restrictions, SSC organised the first overseas study trip since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic three years ago. Led by Dr Pei Qing, Associate Professor of SSC, 20 students from the BSocSc(GES) programme explored major issues related to South Korea’s social, economic, political, cultural, environmental and urban development during a seven-day trip to the country. Students also went on field trips to important sites and facilities including Cheonggyecheon, the city stream that was transformed into a recreational space; the Incheon landfill site; and the country’s water purification facilities, which put the students’ academic knowledge to the test as they learnt about how the South Korean government handles environment-related challenges. The tour also included a visit to the War Memorial and the Demilitarised Zone.
